LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SOHO questions, SOHO answers featuring Michelle Peterson, SOHOJOBS Editor and Director

QUESTION:

Dear Michelle, Is it true you have real data entry jobs from home?

Kaylie Jarrell, North Carolina

ANSWER:

Yes, it's true. You see... as the editor of this website for nearly 15 years I can tell you there is one thing I do not tolerate and that is scams. Yucky, stinky, awful ole scams have no place here at SOHOjobs. So, we don't list them. It's that simple.

Now, you should know - this takes some effort on our parts. The scammers are pretty tricky so they are always trying to sneak their way in. But we pretty much always stop them. We do this by checking every job that is posted here. I apply to the job just like you would and then wait and see what happens. If I get an email box filled with junk or a request for money or some other such thing, I don't allow the job to be posted. Yea... some of those other work at home websites who claim to have thousands of work at home jobs... well, most of them are scams.

We have fewer jobs - but they are real. You can count on it.

Now, back to your question about data entry jobs. Yes, we have real data entry jobs. And typing. And clerical office. And administration. And customer service. And reservations. And every other sort of job. We don't have "thousands", but we do have a variety, and the list changes daily.

These jobs fill quickly and are highly competitive. Not everyone can get one. But, you can certainly try. And keep trying as i continue to find you new listings.

All of the jobs we have here at SOHOjobs are QUALITY! So, check them out. Check them ALL out, and let me know how it works out for you. I love to hear success stories - and most of them here at SOHOjobs are just that... SUCCESS stories!

Entering is very easy. Simply leave a comment on the blog post HERE. You must be a REGISTERED SOHOJOBS USER but you do not need to be a paid member to win. If you are a paid member, your contribution will count TWICE, so you do have a slightly better chance of winning. (Again, my way of saying thanks to you - my very special SOHO'ers and friends.)

Anyway, the drawing will be held in November so we can make sure you get your new computer before the Christmas holidays. I can't wait! Me personally - I've never won a thing so I hope some of you have better luck than me.

If you are not a registered SOHOjobs user, You can join for free here. Once you register you will be able to leave your comment and be entered to win. If you are thinking about joing SOHOjobs, we are still offering the special LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP for only $19.95. (Regular price is $99.95 so this is a great, limited time deal).

Happy SOHO'ing,

Category: Getting Hired

I recently received some really nice emails and inbox messages from members thanking me for helping them find work from home. You guys are the best!

But it got me to thinking... what else can we do here at SOHOjobs to help you? I mean, if you had to narrow it down to just one thing... what would you most like help with? I sent this question out to our active members today and, so far, the response has been an overwhelming...

"We want more data entry and clerical jobs!"

I can't say I blame you. Data entry, typing and clerical work at home jobs are usually associated with the biggest scams on the Internet. Unfortunately, many of you have been the victim of these scams before you arrived safely at the virtual doorsteps of SOHOJOBS.com

I started digging around to see what I could come up with for you. I called up a few of my reliable contacts, business owners and hiring managers. I sent some emails. I Skyped. I texted. One guy I even flagged down in the parking lot of the post office. The result has been a very nice collection of REAL work at home data entry and clerical jobs. And when I say REAL... I mean really REAL. No fees or investments or kits or whatever.

I must say - I am pretty proud of myself because these gigs are not easy to come by. Most employers are usually tight-lipped about home based data entry jobs because they can't deal with the five million applicants they will receive if they post the job online. This is one of the benefits of SOHOjobs. Since jobs are only made available to our members, hiring employers are more likely to share.

And... our members are awesome, by the way. That helps too.

So, if you are a current SOHOjobs member - please keep an eye on the site as I am just now beginning to get these new, most triumpant work at home data entry jobs posted for you. (And... only for you).

SOHOjobs.com SOHOjobs.org SOHOjobs.net has been online since 1998 and has undergone many changes as we have grown. In 2008 we realized it was time to make a substantial upgrade to the site. We decided on DesignB Studios a small firm out of Loudoun County Virginia (http://wasdmz2.courts.state.va.us/CJISWeb/) owned and operated by Brian Reynolds. This was our mistake.

This atrocious ordeal with DesignBStudios was filled with lack of skill, incompetence, mismanagement and complete insolence on the part of the design firm. This nightmare with Design B Studios dragged out well over a year. The result was a broken, unfinished site that was never delivered despite a price tag well over $30.000 (paid in full by us, by the way). When we demanded the unfinished site after paying the final payment as per the contract, DesignB Studios attempted to extort additional funds from us, refusing to turn over the site unless we paid.

Moreover, DesignB Studios obtained a misspelled version of the SOHOjobs URL with the hopes of benefiting from our brand. This form of typosquatting is highly unethical, especially when the squatter is a paid contractor. DesignB Studios not only registered the domain name in bad faith, but then put advertising and affiliate links attempting to profit from our traffic while also driving click-thrus to our competition.

Once they discovered that we were on to them, they quickly attempted to cover their tracks by changing the content of the typosquatted URL and then setting robots to HIDE the archive of the old page. Luckily we have a page shot and will be posting this online for you to see very soon.

We've read other posts which can be found online by searching for "DesignB Studios" that would lead us to believe that we may not be the only company that has encountered these problems with DesignBStudios.  At this time, we cannot attest to the factual nature of these posts as we are still attempting to locate and talk to these individuals. As a result, we can only tell you what we have discovered online from our own research. We encourage you to do your own research as well. Had we only discovered these posts online before we contracted with Design B Studios we surely would not have found ourselves in this situation.

In the end, and for more than $30,000, all we ever received from DesignB Studios was long, irrational and babbling letters from Mr Reynolds about the various reasons why he was unable or unwilling to deliver the completed project, or why he thought he was entitled to even MORE money!  This is now simply a matter for the courts to work out (and from the looks of the Loudoun County courts website, Mr Reynolds is no stranger to them!)

---------------------------------------------
What is typo-squatting

Typo-squatting refers to the practice of registering domain names that are typos of their target domains, which usually host websites with significant traffic.

From the business perspective, many of the typo-squatting cases involve bad-faith domain registrations or trademark violations. Worse yet, it is not uncommon to see a typo domain displaying ads from competitors of the target-domain owner or even negative ads against the owner.

Source: Strider Typo-Patrol: Discovery and Analysis of Systematic Typo-squatting, Yi-Min Wang, Doug Beck, Jeffrey Wang, Chad Verbowski, and Brad Daniels, Microsoft Research, 2006

----------------------------------------------

To this day, Brian Reynolds and Design B Studios still uses the SOHOjobs images in their portfolio. Luckly, we receive emails from their potential customers who are interested in our experience with them. We are happy to give our honest opinion!
Email Us (info@sohojobs.org) for more details.

A BETTER CHOICE

Many of our SOHO'ers ask for our advice on a web design and hosting firm for their home business. We recommend 1&1 MyWebsitealt - this is a very affordable option (hosting for many plans is under $10 per month.) You can choose a professional template FOR FREE and easily customize it to fit your business or home office needs. Save yourself $30,000 and go with 1&1 MyWebsitealt instead!

Yes, I know - It is only Tuesday but it has already been a crazy week. Personally, I always consider it pretty exciting when an employer calls me up and wants to list legitimate data entry and clerical jobs just for our members! That is what happened yesterday, and I already know of at least three SOHO'ers who are already well on their way to a great work at home job!

Of course, I am not surprised. Employers are learning what I've already known for 15 years - SOHO'ers are the best. Hands down. Hiring managers know that we've been online since <gasp!> the 90's. When they are looking for a SOHO'er, they always come to us first.

So, while I am trying to get all these new listings approved in on their way to our members inboxes - I thought I would share a few other excellent work at home opportunities with you. If you get a chance, check out the jobs I've included below, and then login to access to the really good stuff in your "MY SOHO" folder.

Good luck!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SOHO questions, SOHO answers featuring Michelle Peterson, SOHOJOBS Editor and Director

QUESTION:

Dear Michelle, Are you a real person?

Kirsten Ward, Ashley IN

ANSWER:

HA HA! Now THAT is a great question!

And I know what you mean. The onset of the Internet age sure did make real people disappear, didn't it? Heck, sometimes I talk more to my husband via text message than I do face to face. After awhile I even start to wonder if HE is real!

This is all the more evident with work at home websites and career services. Mostly you get just that - a website - and nothing more. Sometimes that is enough, but other times it sure would be nice to have a little human interaction. (This is exactly what I tell my husband, by the way!)

So, anyway - to answer your question - yes, I am a real person. I've been SOHO'ing with SOHOjobs for years now. So long, in fact, that I had no wrinkles or grey hairs when I started. And if my wrinkles and grey hair does not prove that I am a real person than I don't know what can.

I invite, encourage and even adore contact from our SOHO'ers (that means you!) So, drop me a message when you have a question or want to connect. If you are a SOHOjobs member you can reach me via my SOHO Wall or inbox. Keep in mind, I do get a lot of messages so it might take me a day or two to reply, but I will reply. And it won't even be a autoresponse! You will be able to tell from the typos...

Of course - this service is for members only so if you are not a SOHO'er, You can join SOHOjobs for free here to get access to your SOHO Profile, your SOHO wall and have the ability to see what type of work at home jobs we offer. Once you upgrade to a paid membership you will be able to apply for those jobs and attend our live events.

I am really looking forward to chatting with you all online very soon!

Work at Home Opportunities

Typical Positions We Hire for:

Customer Service
Are you comfortable with basic computer applications and navigating through several windows on your screen at the same time - all while carrying on a conversation with a customer? As a customer support agent you are dependable, cooperative and adaptable - and can maintain your composure in a fast-paced and sometimes difficult environment. If you pride yourself on providing exceptional customer service, enjoy helping others, and get satisfaction from a job well done, this is the job for you.

Customer Service and Sales
Are you an enthusiastic, energetic, goal oriented person who enjoys helping customers? Does your creative and quick-thinking personality allow you to create new sales opportunities out of a basic customer service call? This inbound sales position allows you to use your customer service skills to solve everyday client issues, then take it to the next level by offering additional features and promotions. The challenge of meeting your daily and weekly sales goals makes this a fun and exciting career.

Technical Support
Are you kind of person who is very comfortable with technical terminology, PC troubleshooting and home networks? Would you have exceptional listening skills with a customer describing a problem with their computer -- and you help them work through the issues? As a Cloud 10 technical support agent you answer inbound customer calls, gather data, and analyze symptoms to figure out solutions to common technical problems. With this job, every day you walk away with the satisfaction that you've helped customers resolve problems through your specialized help and expertise.

New Product Launch
If you are the type of person that can think quickly on your feet, take any type of question that comes your direction, and love learning something new every day, we have the job for you! In this very special position you will support a client that is launching high-speed internet and voice services to new customers in rural areas all across the country. You will be helping customers (potentially in your own home town) learn about their new service, answer billing questions, resolve complaints, and even provide basic installation and technical troubleshooting. This is a fun and challenging job where you get to be on the front lines of getting a new telecommunications network up and running in your own neighborhood.

AT HOME AGENTS

Assessments

You will be required to complete a phone interview and online assessment before you can be hired. Besides general questions about your work history and education you will be asked scenerio questions pertaining to customer service such as "tell me about a time when you dealt with a difficult customer" or "how did you handle a difficult customer?"

Another aspect of the phone interview will involve completing simple Internet and computers tasks. For instance, you will be asked to visit a variety of websites (one might be the Transcom or Cloud10 website, so be prepared!) You will be given a list of tasks to complete such as finding the name of the CEO or the address of a local office. You will also be asked to complete a Google search (topics will vary) that generally involves finding the best resources and understanding the difference between a valuable website source and advertising or marketing messages. You may also be asked to type a document using your word processing skills that you will email to the interviewer.

You must also submit your computer through a series of tests to make sure that your software is up to date and that you do not have viruses.

SOHO Tips and Advice

Transcom Affiliated Companies. You may see work at home jobs listed for a company called Cloud10. Cloud10 was recently bought out by Transcom and is now part of the Transcom portfolio.

Working Hours. Most agents work 5 days per week, between 32 to 38 hours each week. Agents work the same set schedule each week. Schedules can vary depending on hours of operation and client requirements, and may include nights, weekends or holidays.

Training. There is a paid training program which provides home based agents with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a valued member of the Transcom team.

Salary and Payment. You will be hired as an employee, not an independent contractor. Payrolls are deposited via direct deposit every other Friday, and all appropriate taxes are taken care of. Agents are paid by the hour based on when they sign into our systems and become available to take calls. Pay is not based on the actual number of calls received or talk time.

Requirements. Applicants should have high school diploma and excellent speaking and listening skills. Prior experience in customer service is required, and it is a plus if it is telephone customer service or sales experience. Criminal background check is required. You must meet these home office technical requirements to be hired.

Application Process. If you are a good match, the company will contact you and you will be asked to pass a variety of assessments to ensure you are right for the job and then interview with a recruiter. Typical application process consists of several steps:

  2. Verify that your computer and internet connection meet our technical requirements
  3. Pass a variety of assessments to ensure you are right for the job

SOHO questions, SOHO answers featuring Michelle Peterson, SOHOJOBS Editor and Director

QUESTION:

Dear Michelle, What sort of networking opportunities do you offer at SOHOjobs.com?

Tessa Bryant, Bloomington IN

ANSWER:

We are ALL ABOUT the networking here at SOHOjobs.com!

Our members can use their Profiles to connect with other SOHO'ers in a safe and secure environment in a variety of ways. This includes uploading a profile picture, making wall posts, commenting on activity, blogs and jobs, inbox messaging and more (much like you are probably already doing on Facebook).

While that is all fun and good, I am currently working on some new services that I think you will enjoy. Beginning in September, SOHOjobs will be offering weekly LIVE networking, training and Q&A online events only for our members. You will access this via the "EVENTS" tab above. These live chats will allow you to ask questions, communicate with other members, connect with employers and recruiters, and complete free training seminars about everything from improving your resume to equipping your home office. Our first event will be a Q&A with me! (Michelle Malone Peterson, SOHOjobs Senior Editor and work at home career expert). Watch your inbox - the date/time will be announced very soon.

If you have an idea for a SOHO event that you would like to attend, let me know! I would love to hear your ideas.

If you are interested in trying it out, I am currently offering a FREE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP upgrade to anyone who signs up for the 1 Month Plan ($19.95).

I am really looking forward to chatting with you all online very soon!

Happy SOHO'ing,

  • NASDAQ: CVG
  • WEBSITE

Work at Home Opportunities

HOME AGENTS: $9.50 per hour and up, part time.

As a Convergys Home Agent, you will be receiving incoming and occasionally outbound calls from customers of leading companies. The types of calls vary, and may include sales, customer service with upselling, troubleshooting, or technical support. Convergys provides a comprehensive, paid training program designed to develop successful Home Agents.

Most calls are inbound. No telemarketing or sales. Customers who call generally know what they want to order, but may need help to identify the right item. Some of our programs require more proactive sales skills than others. These programs are not high pressure sales situations, but do require the ability to offer alternative products and sell additional products to customers. Some of our Client’s do require achieving a desired sales metric.

Convergys Home Agents are offered part-time and full-time scheduling options that range from 16 to 40 hours of work per week. Schedules are made available based on program needs.

Testing Requirement

There are seven steps to the application process with Convergys.  After completing these seven steps, qualified candidates will be contacted via email by a Convergys Recruiter for further discussion of employment opportunities.  All interviews will be conducted over the phone or via the computer.  The interview takes approximately one hour to complete, and yes, you must be on your home phone and at your computer that you applied from. Keep in mind this is a formal interview, so be sure to be in a quiet environment with no distractions.

Application Process

  1. Testing Your PC (Technology Requirements)
  2. Test Your Internet Speed
  3. Select Country and select Jobs
  4. Begin Your Application Profile
  5. Complete Your Application Profile
  6. Enter Demographic Information
  7. Test Your Voice Quality

TRAINING; you will participate in a training course that is specific to the client company you will be supporting. The duration of this training course varies, depending on the role you will play in support of the customers. You will receive information on the duration of this training early in your on-boarding process with Convergys. Training courses will be delivered in self-paced and instructor-led formats via your PC, using special techniques for distance and adult learning. As a member of the Convergys Home Team, you will have the flexibility and comfort of progressing through the training courses in the privacy of your own home.

You will be tested at various points of your training to ensure you’re as prepared as possible once you start answering calls.

Requirements

HOME OFFICE: Your home office should be separate from any noise or distraction in your home. Ensure your home office is equipped with the tools – and work area – you will need to be able to do your job, just as if you were in an actual office environment.

You will likely want to share with family, friends and neighbors that you will be joining Convergys as a Home Agent, and that when you are working in your home office, you cannot be disturbed during your scheduled work time.

Working from home will require you to be at your computer with no interaction except for the incoming calls that you receive from your computer via soft phone for up to 8 hours at a time. The perception that we need to give is that you are working in a call center, not at home. We have a zero tolerance policy for noise.

There are no fees associated with joining the Convergys Home Team.

If an employment offer is extended, you will need to supply your own work equipment to enable you to work from home, including:

  1. A home computer that meets Convergys’ PC specifications (see related question). You can test your PC automatically when you start your application.
  2. A USB headset with a built-in digital signal processor. If you do not own one, you can purchase one locally or from the Dell Store, which offers equipment configured to meet the Convergys standards.

  4. An Internet Service Provider that Supplies 2 or more IP addresses OR an Internet Service Provider that supplies 1 IP address and is connected to a router.
  5. Power Bar/Surge Protector that is UL 1449 Recognized – This will assist in protecting equipment plugged into the power bar, in the event of an electrical storm or power surge.
  6. A telephone with a mute button (All monthly telephone and internet charges are the responsibility of the employee and are not reimbursed by Convergys.)

.

SOHO questions, SOHO answers featuring Michelle Peterson, SOHOJOBS Editor and Director

QUESTION:

Dear Michelle, I really like the new SOHOjobs.com website. Can you tell me more about it?

Allison Larson, Covington TN

ANSWER:

I've gotta tell ya - I am pretty excited about the new SOHOjobs.com

Our new website has been up and running for about a year now and has been tremendously successful with our members, employers and even the media. The concept has created a lot of attention because we are the only social network for job seekers, business owners, recruiters and hiring managers who are interested in working from home or finding home based employees.

Basically, you can think of SOHOjobs as a sort of Facebook for virtual work opportunities. You can friend request other members including Team SOHO staff (friend me here), search and apply for work at home jobs, communicate with employers, create and share your blog (great for you home based business owners out there), share events, classifieds and so much more. To put it simply - it's the most fun you can have while finding work from your home.

One of my favorite parts about the new SOHOjobs is my ability to interact with our members. Back in the day I was stuck with email, which most of you never seemed to get thanks to those pesky spam filters. But now we can talk to each other directly on our SOHO walls or SOHO inbox.

You can join SOHOjobs for free here to get access to your SOHO Profile, your SOHO wall and have the ability to see what type of work at home jobs we offer. Once you upgrade to a paid membership you will be able to apply for those jobs too!

If you are interested in trying it out, I am currently offering a FREE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP upgrade to anyone who signs up for the 1 Month Plan ($19.95).

I hope you will join us. I've always said that the thing that makes SOHOjobs special is YOU - our SOHO'ers. We are like a family and I would love for you to be a part of it.

Happy SOHO'ing,

SOHO Tips and Advice

Lionbridge is only interested in SERIOUS employees. Therefore, it might be a good idea to avoid telling the interviewer that you need to work from home because you have children. Some SOHO'ers have reported that they were turned down for this reason after being told that the Lionbridge interviewer didn't think they could focus on their job since their children were a priority.

Much of the Practical portion of the exam does not necessary have one right or wrong answer. Lionbridge is instead looking for your reasoning skills and your ability to decipher the results of Internet search returns. SOHO'ers who are hired tend to be those who are familiar with the Internet and search engines and have a good understanding of the way that users locate information online.

If you pass both parts of the test you may experience a delay before you can actually begin to work. Do not worry. This is normal as Lionbridge has hundreds of new hires and tasks to assign. Be patient. Do not pesture the hiring manager with phone calls or emails as this may cost you the opportunity to work for them.

Lionbridge will probably ask for your bank account information and other personal information after they offer you employment. This is standard and nothing to be concerned about. Most Lionbridge employees are paid via direct deposit so your account information will be needed so they can deposit your earnings. You will also be required to complete a W-9 and timesheet.

As you probably know, we take scams pretty seriously around here. So, when a member attempts to take advantage of our SOHO'ers we crack down hard. Such is the case of a recent email you might have recieved from "Haskins Inc" aka "The RealThing Company" aka "FreshStart" aka A BIG SCAM!

Let this be a notice to any other scammers out there who might think it would be fun to join SOHOjobs and then attempt to scam our members. THEY WILL REPORT YOU and then we will PUBLISH your email address and your scam HERE for all the world to see. We also will keep the scammers IP, email and other personal info on file and report the violation to all proper authorties.

This scam is widely published on sites such as Craigslist and free work at home job websites.

This is a classic counterfeit check depositing scam. DO NOT FALL FOR IT. No legit employer will ask you to deposit checks in your bank account. EVER.  If you get a message requesting that you deposit funds or send money orders CONACT SOHOJOBS so that we can report them to the authorities.

See "F" Rating With Better Business Bureau HERE

The scammers also use the name FRESHSTART2014.com, ROCHE INC and HASKINS INC

They will usually contact you via email spam and have you go through an online interview process. Then they will send you a "Start Up Check" so that you can purchase a laptop. THE CHECK IS COUNTERFEIT! It will bounce, so don't deposit it. They will tell you that you must send a moneygram for $300 or more to get started.

This scammer has used all of these email addresses (but has hundreds of others so beware!)

Recently I was contacted by a hiring manager who was interested in listing jobs with SOHOjobs. Nothing surprising there. But what did shock me was WHO wanted to list jobs. The hiring manager represented a top retail department store and their international recruiting office. I've been doing this since 1997 and even I had no idea they hired home based workers.

As I've been saying for years, as technology improves and more homes become wired, connected and technology supported - the more work at home jobs will pop up where you would least expect them.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN OLD RETAIL

When I think of a department store - I think of sales clerks and cashiers, floor managers and stock room attendents. But that is not the case anymore. Major brick and mortar retail brands are beginning to see the benefits of hiring home based customer service, catalog, telephone support and Internet ordering assistants. Even the most traditional of retail brands are embracing the idea. Just look at Lord & Taylor, one of the more mainstream retailers in terms of corporate philosphy. Even THEY recently hired Home Based Customer Service and Telephone agents to work from home. (Visit the Lord & Taylor Career Page and search for keyword HOME to see if openings are still available).

Read more about the job Here (positions are still available as of this publishing but I cannot guarantee the continued availability.)

SOHOJOBS CAN HELP YOU LAND A JOB

Lord & Taylor is far from the only virtual job retailers. SOHOjobs currently lists many great home based customer service, ordering assistant and general administration jobs with top department stores. If you are a SOHOJOBS MEMBER you can access these jobs anytime simply by logging in and applying online or contacting the employer directly. (Be sure to let them know you are a SOHO'er!)

To increase your chances of being hired, make sure that you home office is ready to go. Some employers, such as Lord & Taylor will supply you with some equipment such as a headset, but others do not - so it might be a good idea to have a quality set on hand. Generally, retail employers will also require that you have an ergomatic office chair, a PC microphone and a corded business telephone (sometimes with a sepearate phone line). Luckily, all of this equipment is easy and inexpensive to obtain.

If you are interested in working from home for a top retail brand - or any other established employer, SOHOjobs has hundreds of verified and immediate hire openings that might interest you. Full and part time - with salaries starting at around $11 per hour and up.

We look forward to helping you land a SOHO - JOB!

Choosing a web designer for your small business project can be daunting. We should know! A few years ago we contracted DesignB Studios (out of Ashburn Virginia) to redesign the SOHOjobs Members website. We (over!)paid them more than $30,000 and what we got in return was a nightmare that included domain name squatting. To this day we still have multiple problems with the backend design work that these less-than-professional web designers provided to us. Clearly they were not as apt with the SocialEngine platform as they claimed.

We are happy to report that we are working with a new design firm who are clearning up the mess that DesignB left behind. (If only you could join in our meetings to witness the snorts, laughs and eyerolls from our new design team as they attempt to decipher and repair the DesignB Studios code.)

Ironically, we are contacted for a DesignB Studios reference or testimonial fairly often by their potential clients. Apparently DesignB Studios still promotes their "work" with SOHOjobs including listing us on thier homepage. (Isn't that just a hoot!?) Well, I can promise you - we are NOT happy with their work and WOULD NOT hire them again, nor would we EVER refer them to anyone looking for web design or programming work. In fact, we wouldn't even hire them to take out the trash! We are happy to provide you with full details regarding our experience should you need them. Please send email to info@sohojobs.com if we can help.

In the meantime, we are working with a new (and - thankfully - skilled and professional!) design firm who are helping us fix the DesignB Studios errors and sloppy code work. If you are a current or previous SOHOjobs member please let us know if there are any additions you would like to see. In the coming weeks you will begin to notice changes to your account including better profile and account management, improved employer and member communication and new features that will help you better utilize the SOHOjobs service.

Thank you for standing by us as we attempt to overcome the biggest mistake we ever made - hiring DesignB Studios!

My best

Category: Getting Hired

Social media such as Facebook and LInkedIn are making it easier to locate and land work at home jobs and connect to virtual hiring managers. However, according to our recent members survey, many SOHO'ers are still using obsolete methods such as MS Word paper resumes that have a very low success rate.  Out of 1,500 home based employers, nearly 60 percent of these hiring managers use social media to locate job candidates, research potential hires and compare the competition. Another 35 percent delete or disregard paper or email attached resumes completely. So, if you have not already - it is time to pay attention to social networking and your online presence.

"Of all job candidates, those seeking virtual work from home should be the MOST well connected online, not the least," said Todd Rebic, professional recruiter and hiring manager for the temp industry. "Nothing will turn off a hiring employer quicker than a candidate who focuses on her typing speed instead of her website, blog and porftolio."

Soft Skills verses Hard Skills

Our research confirms this statement. Work at home job seekers who have a strong online presence on job networks such as SOHOjobs and other social networks, and active online resumes or websites are much more likely to be hired than candidates who are just uses a paper or emailed resume. Additionally, job seekers who focus on "soft" skills (communication & connectivity, virtual teamwork abilities, organizational skills, etc) are more likely to be interviewed for a home based job than candidates who focus on "hard" skills such as their typing speed.

It is not difficult to get yourself connected. The easiest thing to do is make sure that you have professional profiles are all the major social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc). If you already have a personal account, you might consider a seperate account just for your professional life. You should also use your SOHOjobs profile to its fullest extent. Be sure that it includes your current resume, a photo and a full bio.

To make sure that employers can find you online, post a copy of your bio and resume on all of the top job sites. We suggest you stick to free services including Monsteralt, Beyondalt and VOT (for virtual assistant jobs).

Get A Website

Perhaps the most important thing you can do it set up a personal website that links to all of your online profiles and social network accounts, your resume, your references and anything else you feel will get you noticed. Some of our most successful SOHO'ers also use QR Codes, YouTube Channels and personal blogs to get themselves noticed. It works! Job seekers who are well connected online are usually hired first, are employed longer, earn more, and are contacted directly by SOHOjobs hiring employers.

It is easy to set up a website and is often times very low cost or completely free. For this reason, there really is no excuse for a professional home based job seeker to go without. Weebly - The Easiest Way To Create A Website offers a free service that allows you to set up a website with blog. Since the service is free you will be required to show their ads and links to their service. If you would prefer a more professional option, iPagealt is one of the most affordable. They offer a quick and easy to use site builder, free domain name and much more for just a few dollars per month. And they will not require you to run their ads or links.

Jobs In Social Media

Not only is social media helpful in getting you hired to work from home, it can also be a great place to get a work at home job! Thousands of companies are hiring people to make posts to Facebook and Twitter, maintain and monitor social accounts and interact with brand customers on social networks.

SOHO'er Barbara Lesch recently asked me about work at home offers that involve taking online surveys and researching and why SOHOjobs.com does not post more of these opportunities.

Simply put, most of these offers are not what I would consider a work at home "job". Instead, think of them more as incentive programs that allow you to earn points for merchandise or services, provide you with the chance to win and, in a few cases, help you to earn a little extra cash.  This is not to say that I am AGAINST these offers. I just do not think they should be considered a job.

With that said, there are some programs out there that might be worth a look.

NPD Online Research has been around for about 40 years and people really do win cash and merchandise from completely surveys. Full disclosure... even I myself won $100 cash and airline miles from them years ago. The surveys are quick and easy and they will not sell you out to the spammers. Click here to visit NPD Online Research to learn more

IpSOS is another rewards program that I consider to be legitmate. Again, while this should not be considered a work at home job, it is possible to win decent cash and rewards from the progam, plus you will accumulate points which can be redeemed for products. (I have accumulated gift cards, a spa treatment, a paypal cash over the years). For more information, visit the Ipsos Survey Panel website

Panda Research is more of a cash payout program than a rewards based system. They actually pay $5.00 to $75.00 per survey. These surveys are more detailed and will require more of your time, but the cash earnings are real. The downside is that surveys are few and far between. The best thing to do is sign up for an account (it's free) so that you can start being notified of new surveys as they come available. Visit Panda Research to sign up.

Swagbucks is best if you are interested in earning Paypal, Amazon, and Department Store gift cards. I know people who have paid for all of their Christmas shopping thanks to the program. Besides taking surveys, you can also earn points and gift cards for playing and evaluating online games, sampling products, watching videos, and searching the web. I have used the program to purchase items from Amazon but it does take some time to accumulate the points. Visit Swagbucks for more information.

Permission Research is one of the Internet's largest research firms. This program works a bit differnetly than the others in that you are required to download and install free software that monitors your Web usage. This data is then used to create research reports for major news outlets such as Fox and MSNBC, amoung others. As the program runs on your computer you accumulate points which are redeemable for cash, gift cards, electronics and more. Join PermissionResearch Here

Survey4Profit is operated Vindale Research and pays real cash, not just points or prizes. You'll earn up to $5 for each survey and up to $75 for evaluations. You can also earn cash for watching videos, reading emails, and referring others. The program is free to join. You will answer some questions during the sign up process so you can be matched up with appropriate surveys and other cash earning opportunities. Learn More Here.

While there are other programs out there, these - in my opinion - are the most dependable, legitimate and offer the best payouts or rewards. I suggest that you stay away from any survey or similiar offer that asks you to pay a fee or forward a money order. Beware of sensational claims too. If the program claims that their members earn "Thousands of dollars" each week don't believe it. The best programs are those that have a list of real users (usually via a "Winners" page) and offer realistic testimonials about earnings.

If you have found success with one of these or another program, let me know!

A fellow "Soho'er" Kathy Keating just provided a great insight to one of my previous Sohojobs.com blog post. I hope she won't mind if I replicate it and discuss it here. Kathy's comment was:

“I think telecommuting is now officially a part of my life. I'm even telecommuting when I'm *in* the office because I have meetings with people all over the world and I honestly don't care if they're at home or in an office as long as they're getting their work done.

We discussed this at length, because Kathy's insight is into the very nature of telecommuting itself: telecommuting or telework means "a work arrangement in which employees enjoy flexibility in working location and hours.", not just "working at home". Home is not the centre of the universe, rather there is no center, just lots of locations, all some distance from each other. So your work organization could consist entirely of one-person home offices, or like Princess Cruise Lines, the offices could be cubes in one of many floors in one of several buildings on a campus, as part of a large multinational. Most companies are somewhere in between. But the crucial point is the shift in the basic, underlying assumption, from:

The business world is basically centralised, and anything that's elsewhere is a special case

to:

The world is basically distributed, with co-location of entities being a happy convenience.

Translating this into practical terms, organizations that wish to fully embrace teleworking should ensure that all their staff are as fully equipped as the homeworker with phone, computer, webcam and headset, so they don't end up with the situation where our teleworker can't use the power of the communications at her disposal because her co-workers back at the ranch don't have the same kit.

I hope this doesn't sound like a rant but the difference in thinking is huge.

What's your opinion?

If you think you have a pretty sweet deal because you're allowed to work from home one or two days a week, consider the arrangement SOHOjobs subscriber Natalie Swanson managed to make with her employer.

She worked for 13 months telecommuting from Spain— yeah that's right, the site of glorious architecture, canals and delicious pasta.

Swanson says her was a work at home arrangement that many SOHOers can emulate.

She argues that if you can telecommute five or 25 miles from your office, why can't you telecommute from another part of the world? "When I returned to the U.S., I had a renewed sense of vitality toward my job and my life," he says. "When you experience life outside the U.S., you get to look at life from a different lens. You then realize that you can look at everything differently. I even came back and looked at problems at work differently."

So at a time when many Americans feel overworked and stressed, could telecommuting from Spain — or another desired location — be possible?

First you have to do a little planning. Swanson's advice:

Start slowly. Swanson has been working for a communications company she found on sohojobs.com part time where she is still employed for over 3 years. She began working from home one day a week, found a way to send large files then eventually increased that to full time. This tactic helped convince her bosses that a full-time telecommuting arrangement wouldn't hurt her work.

Natalie's advice: Don't discount the part time positions found on sohojobs.com “Of course I wanted a full time position but I wanted to work at home immediately”. She told her employer her intentions immediately, “He couldn't promise a full time position but was open to the idea” she said.

There have been many part time telecommuting jobs that sohojobs.com subscribers have not applied for simply because they are “part time”. Natalie is a prime example of working your way into a full time gig.
